Technisch betrachtet ist der Plan schnell erzählt und erscheint – zumindest oberflächlich – nicht kompliziert:
Wir fliegen zur Westküste der USA. Dort steht in einer Scheune unser vorbereiteter Airstream-Wohnwagen, das Zugfahrzeug und mein nagelneues E-Mountainbike. Das E-Bike wird vorerst verladen und dann fahren wir so rasch es eben geht rund 4000 km quer zur Ostküste, nach New York. Dort geht das Abenteuer eigentlich erst richtig los:
Der Plan ist, mit dem Bike in drei Monaten von der Ost- zur Westküste zu radeln. Genauer gesagt von New York nach San Francisco. Natürlich will ich so wenig wie möglich auf befahrenen Strassen unterwegs sein. Zudem habe ich einen kleinen Umweg über die Badlands in South Dakota geplant. Daraus resultiert eine Strecke von 6500 km und eine Höhendifferenz von 45'000 m. Im Durchschnitt warten etwa 100 km pro Tag auf mich.
Technically, the plan is quickly told and - at least superficially - does not seem complicated:
We fly to the west coast of the USA. There, in a barn, is our prepared Airstream camper, the towing vehicle and my brand new e-mountain bike. The e-bike is loaded for the time being and then we drive as fast as we can about 4000 km across to the East Coast, to New York. There the adventure really starts:
The plan is to cycle from the East to the West Coast in three months. More precisely, from New York to San Francisco.
Of course, I want to be on the road as little as possible. In addition I have planned a small detour over the Badlands in South Dakota. This results in a distance of 6500 km and an altitude difference of 45'000 m. On average about 100 km per day are waiting for me.
Mache ich das alles alleine?
Ja und nein. Bei den enormen Weiten, die ich durchfahren will, gibt es natürlich nicht alle 100 km eine Übernachtungsmöglichkeit. Deshalb bin ich auf die Unterstützung von meiner lieben Moni angewiesen. Sie wird den Wohnwagen über offizielle Strassen zu einem Punkt führen, wo sich meine Wege mit der Strasse kreuzen, und wo es hoffentlich einen mehr oder weniger geeigneten Rastplatz gibt.
Will I do all this alone?
No and yes. With the enormous distances I want to travel, there is of course no possibility to stay overnight every 100 km. Therefore I am dependent on the support of my dear Moni. She will lead the caravan over official roads to a point where my ways cross with the road and where there is hopefully a more or less suitable resting place.
